We have recently installed this new GRP fibreglass flat roof in Banstead, Surrey. On a roof such as this, fibreglass far exceeds the capabilities of traditional flat roofing materials. With the many corners and edgings around the chimney and roof windows, felt would have lots of joins and folds in the material, creating weak spots and seams where in time it would eventually fail and allow water to ingress. Lead would fair better over time but the same problems exist, but the real problem with lead is the monumental cost of the material.
By using fibreglass all of these problems are easily overcome. The super tough resin construction starts out as a highly moldable matting and resin mix, that can be formed around any shape with ease. This property makes it by far the best material for forming corners and complex angles around roof windows and chimneys such as the ones on this roof. Once cured and the UV resistant top coat is applied it is extremely tough, and without seams or joins it has no weak points. Fibreglass flat roofs also have the benefit of being around one third the price of a new lead roof. We are specialsts in the supply and installation of continuous aluminium guttering. With no joints to fail or move this is the smartest guttering system avalable. It is pre-powder coated with a tough finish that never needs painting. Each section of guttering is formed to the exact requirements on site so there is virtually no wastage. Being made of aluminium, it has a long life of 30+ years and is made from recyciled material, so no matter what colour you choose, it is a green solution. Our latest roofing project has been to re-roof a victorian semi detached house in Surrey. We stripped of all the old roof coverings, including the wooden batons and felt, then replaced the old felt with Tyvec. This is a waterproof breathable membrane that behaves in the same way as Gortex, commonly found in walking shoes and waterproof clothing. This allows the roof to "breath" and keep water out in the event of a slate being broken in the future. We replaced the batons with JB-RED treated batons, which are super tough and made of the best quality wood to avoid cracking and rotting. We installed new two new Velux loft windows, as the owners are making use of the loft space as a gym. These let lots of light in and provide plenty of ventilation when open. The parapet wall was in a poor state so we made good the brickwork and rendered up to the original coping stones and down onto our new code 5 lead flashings. New natural slates were then laid on top and finished off with terra-cotta concrete ridge and hip tiles. We were delighted with the end result, as was the client. Thats one more roof in Surrey that won't need any attention for another 100 years or so.
We have been busy replacing old, and rather dangerous cast-iron down-pipes in Surrey, at the beautiful Caxton House near Oxted.
This lovely old building is one of a number of heritage properties in South London and Surrey that we regularly carry out roofing and guttering works on.
In this case, the large old cast-iron down-pipes had begun to crack with age and were not looking very secure in their mountings. We safely removed the old pipes and replaced them with a traditional cast aluminium down-pipes which looks very close to the original and is much lighter. We also had to fashion new wooden mounting blocks for the pipes to fit on. These also had to match the original bone-shaped items.
Both the owners and ourselves were very pleased with the way the new pipes fit in so well with the style of the property
